Cloudy pool water: causes and fixes

Start with the color

White or gray haze with no green tint: this page. The three causes, in the order to check them

1. Filtration deficit. The filter is dirty, worn, or simply not running long enough. This is the most common cause and the cheapest to confirm: check the pressure gauge against its clean baseline, look at the cartridge, and count actual daily run hours. The six-step clearing sequence

  1. Test before you dose. Test free chlorine, combined chlorine, pH, and alkalinity with fresh strips or a drop kit -- or have a pool store run the sample. Dosing blind is how cloudy pools stay cloudy while the chemical bill grows.
  2. Fix sanitizer first. If free chlorine is low or combined chlorine is high (the sharp "chlorine smell" is actually chloramines), shock the pool per the product label and your pool volume, in the evening so the desert sun does not burn it off before it works.

  5. Clean the filter mid-job. A filter clearing a cloudy pool loads up fast. Rinse cartridges or backwash sand/DE partway through, and check the pressure gauge -- running 8-10 psi over the clean baseline means the filter is choking on what it caught.
  6. Retest and only then consider clarifier. If chemistry is balanced and filtration is working, a clarifier can help the filter catch the finest particles. It is the last step, not the first -- clarifier dumped into unbalanced water is money in suspension.

Clarifier vs. flocculant (they are not the same product)

Both target particles too fine for the filter, by opposite strategies. A clarifier clumps fine particles into filter-catchable sizes and asks the filter to do the rest -- gentle, hard to misuse, but gradual, and it depends on the filter actually running long hours. A flocculant binds particles into clumps heavy enough to sink everything to the floor, which then must be vacuumed to waste -- bypassing the filter entirely -- before circulation resumes. Floc is faster and more dramatic, but on a cartridge system with no waste line it is often simply the wrong tool, and flocced water pulled through the filter instead of to waste undoes the whole exercise. If the label says vacuum to waste and your equipment cannot, that product is not for your pool -- a genuinely common self-inflicted wound.

The three mistakes that keep pools cloudy

Dosing before testing. Clarifier into unbalanced water, shock into a pool with sky-high stabilizer, pH correction by feel -- each buys another cloudy week. The test costs minutes. Shocking at noon.
